Trifid Nebula Reimagined: A Return to the Stars

It's a triumphant return to the cosmos for this astrophotographer! After a lengthy break necessitated by life's demands, the observatory has been rewired, the control software rewritten, and the passion for capturing the night sky reignited. This is the first new image released after the hiatus, a breathtaking view of the Trifid Nebula, and a promising sign of many more celestial wonders to come.

The Trifid Nebula

A Masterclass in Observation

This image represents a significant investment in time and expertise, with a total integration time of 17.5 hours. The meticulous acquisition process involved:

  • Luminance: 117 x 180s
  • Red: 35 x 180s
  • Green: 35 x 180s
  • Blue: 33 x 180s
  • Hydrogen-alpha (6nm): 77 x 300s

The optical train, utilizing an 840mm focal length, was powered by a suite of high-quality equipment:

Hardware:

  • Skywatcher Esprit 120
  • Skywatcher EQ8Rh Pro mount
  • ZWO ASI533 Camera @ -10°C
  • Astrodon RGB Gen2 E-Series Tru-Balance filters
  • Astronomik Luminance and 6nm H-α filters
  • Starlight Xpress Lodestar X2 Autoguider
  • Starlight Instruments Feather Touch Focuser

Location & Timing:

Exposures were gathered over three clear nights, from July 27th to July 29th, 2025, from an orange zone (Bortle 7) in Brisbane, Australia.

Software:

The complex process of planning, capturing, and processing was expertly managed using a range of sophisticated software:

  • Planning & camera alignment: Aladin 10
  • Capture: TheSkyX Professional
  • Guiding: PHD2
  • Processing: PixInsight (Calibrate, align, integrate, dynamic background extraction, LRGB combination, noise reduction, spectrophotometric flux calibration, multiscale gradient correction, background neutralisation, spectrophotometric colour calibration, histogram, curves)

The resulting image of the Trifid Nebula is a testament to the dedication and skill involved. It's a vibrant display of cosmic gas and dust, showcasing the incredible detail that can be achieved with passion and precision. Welcome back to the world of astrophotography!
