When I Captured the Aurora at Mono Lake: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Show

Aurora at Mono Lake

After almost eight years of Aurora chasing around the world, I never imagined witnessing a Northern Lights show like the one from October 2024 in a low-latitude location like California! It was a truly unique and unforgettable moment.

My commitment to finding clear skies led me on a long drive. Starting from Vegas, Mono Lake was the closest promising location, despite being a 5-hour journey. The urgency was amplified by an important appointment I had back in town the very next morning.

And the incredible news? This very image has been shortlisted for Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2025! It’s an honor I'm still processing, and I'm truly happy about it.

For those interested in the technical details behind this shot:

  • Camera: Sony A1
  • Lens: Sony 14mm GM f/1.8
  • Settings: Single shot, 5 seconds exposure, f/1.8 aperture, ISO 8000

I want to thank everyone for the congratulations and kind words. It's rewarding to know that the content I share is appreciated!

It's fascinating to think that some people were there for the sunset and missed out on this extraordinary celestial display. It truly was a moment worth the drive and the anticipation!
