A Mystical Aurora Over Alaska
Witness a truly magical scene unfold above the rugged landscape of Alaska. Photographer Todd Salat has shared an awe-inspiring image capturing the ethereal glow of an aurora borealis as it gracefully floats in the sky.
The Scene
The aurora is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Wrangell Mountains, near McCarthy, Alaska. Adding to the celestial spectacle, a waning moon casts its soft light, mirroring itself in the gentle ripples of the Kennicott River. This breathtaking view was captured around 3 am on September 15, 2025.
An Unplugged Experience
Salat, a seasoned observer of Alaska's natural wonders, describes the experience of being off-the-grid in this remote area. Without cell phone data, he was reliant on the classic anticipation of celestial events, reminiscent of the "ol' analog film days." The clear night coinciding with a significant substorm break-up of the aurora was a "wish granted," a moment of pure joy for the photographer.
For three decades, Salat has been a "local tourist" enjoying the timeless beauty and natural rhythms of McCarthy, Kennicott, and the Wrangell Mountains. This photograph is a testament to the enduring allure of this pristine wilderness and the captivating phenomena it hosts.
