Chasing Stars: An Epic Night Under the Sky at Mt Taranaki
Mountaineering and stargazing – two passions that combined for an unforgettable experience high above the clouds on Mt Taranaki, New Zealand. It was an ambitious adventure that involved a significant drive, a challenging climb, and a night spent under a blanket of stars.
The Journey Up
After a four-hour drive from Wellington, the real adventure began. We started our ascent around 6 PM, laden with gear and camping equipment. The climb to 2000 meters was not for the faint of heart, especially as daylight faded and the path ahead became illuminated only by our headlamps. It was a slightly unsettling experience to navigate the mountain in the dark, but taking our time ensured our safety.
Unexpected Accommodations
Our plan was to stay at the Syme Hut, but upon arrival, we discovered it was already full. While a bit of a setback, the universe had a different plan for us. We ended up sleeping under the open sky, a compromise that turned out to be even more magical.
A Sky Full of Wonders
The effort was well worth it. We were greeted with a completely clear night sky, offering an unparalleled view of the cosmos. Getting the perfect projection of the sky took considerable effort and patience, but the final result was incredibly rewarding. The carefully edited star glows, achieved through meticulous brushwork rather than a filter, added an ethereal quality to the scene.
