Witnessing the Crimson Skies: A Blood Moon Over Germany

Astrophotography allows us to capture the celestial wonders that grace our night sky, and sometimes, these events are truly breathtaking. Today, we're showcasing a remarkable capture of a Blood Moon over Germany, a testament to dedication and skillful processing.

A Celestial Spectacle Captured

The image below, expertly captured and processed, brings the drama of a lunar event to life. The deep crimson hue of the moon, often referred to as a 'Blood Moon', is a result of sunlight being filtered and refracted through Earth's atmosphere during a total lunar eclipse. This particular capture showcases the moon with a beautiful halo and the subtle backdrop of distant stars.

The Art of the HDR Stack

Achieving such detail and dynamic range in astrophotography often requires advanced techniques. This stunning image was created using an HDR (High Dynamic Range) stacking method. Here's a glimpse into the meticulous process:

  • Camera and Telescope: The capture utilized a Panasonic S5 camera paired with an Orion Starblast II telescope.
  • Acquisition Details: Four images were captured and manually stacked in Photoshop.
    • One image was intentionally overexposed to capture the delicate halo surrounding the moon.
    • Another image focused on preserving the fainter background stars, with the camera pointed away from the direct light of the moon.
    • Two additional images were taken with varying exposure settings to capture the diverse tonal range of the lunar surface.
  • Exposure Settings: The camera was set to an ISO of 6400 with an exposure time of 1/13th of a second.

This meticulous approach, combining careful acquisition and skillful post-processing, results in an image that not only captures the raw beauty of the Blood Moon but also enhances its finer details, making it a truly remarkable piece of astrophotography.
