The Art of the Composite

This breathtaking panorama is the result of meticulous planning and execution, comprised of approximately 20 individual frames. To capture both the celestial wonders of the Milky Way and the grounding details of the landscape, the photographer utilized a star tracker. This allowed for separate, optimized shots of the sky (around 12 frames) and the foreground (around 8 frames), seamlessly blended into this single, stunning composition.

Navigating Light Pollution

Even with the wonders of the cosmos on display, the subtle glow of civilization is present. The bright light pollution visible on the horizon to the south originates from Melbourne, located over 100 kilometers away. To the west, the lights of Bendigo are visible, and Shepparton adds its glow to the north. These earthly lights serve as a reminder of our connection to both the vastness of space and our communities on Earth.

The sky portion of this image was captured using a Sony A7III camera paired with a Sigma 24mm f/1.4 lens, mounted on a SkyWatcher Star Adventurer tracker. The settings for the sky were: 24mm focal length, f/1.4 aperture, 30-second exposure, and ISO 1000. The foreground was also captured with the Sony A7III and Sigma 24mm f/1.4 lens at 24mm, f/1.4, a 30-second exposure, and ISO 1000, ensuring a balanced and detailed final image.
