The Milky Way Arch at Passo Giau: A Photographer's Challenge

The Milky Way arch at Passo Giau, Dolomites

Capturing the night sky in its full glory can be a rewarding experience, but sometimes, the most breathtaking shots come with the greatest challenges. This is certainly true for the stunning image of the Milky Way arch captured at Passo Giau in the Dolomites.

Overcoming the Elements

The photographer describes this particular endeavor as one of the most challenging arches ever captured. The primary culprits? Intense light pollution and high humidity. Despite a beautiful sunset, the crew found themselves enveloped in mist during the crucial blue hour. Fortunately, the night cleared up, offering a window of opportunity.

The Technical Hurdles

Even with a clear sky, the battle continued. The lens heater was set to its maximum power, yet it proved insufficient. The persistent humidity meant the lens needed cleaning after every 2-3 shots, making the meticulous process of stacking the panorama a labor of love.

The Gear Behind the Shot

  • Camera: Sony a7 IV, Sony a7 III Astro mod
  • Lenses: Sony 14mm f1.8 GM, Sony 20mm f1.8 G
  • Mount: iOptron Skyguider Pro

This incredible shot is a testament to the photographer's skill, perseverance, and the power of dedicated astrophotography equipment. The result is a truly remarkable and beautiful depiction of our galaxy arching over a majestic landscape.
