The Majestic North America Nebula: A Captivating Astrophotography Journey
We're thrilled to share an awe-inspiring image of the North America Nebula, NGC 7000, a celestial wonder that never ceases to amaze. This captivating rendition was brought to life by dedicated astrophotographer Gianluca Belgrado, who navigated a few technical hurdles to capture this breathtaking view.
The Acquisition Process: Perseverance Under a Bortle 8 Sky
Capturing celestial objects requires meticulous planning and execution, and this shot of the North America Nebula is no exception. A total of 113 exposures, each lasting 2.5 minutes, were painstakingly gathered. The imaging train consisted of a full-spectrum modified Canon 6D DSLR, paired with a Celestron LPR filter, which helps to reduce light pollution.
Despite a broken power supply for his computer, which runs off a car battery, our astrophotographer persevered with an older Synguider autoguider that lacks dithering capabilities. This meant that every 15-20 minutes, manual intervention was required to slightly adjust the framing, a crucial step to mitigate sensor noise and ensure the highest quality data.
The observations were made from Casarano (LE), an area experiencing a Bortle 8 sky, which signifies a significant level of light pollution. This challenging environment makes the capture of faint details even more impressive.
