Star Trails Under a Stormy Sky: An Unforgettable Night on Turkey's Salt Lake
During a cycling journey across Turkey in 2022, I found myself on the vast expanse of the Salt Lake (Tuz Gölü). The September heat was still intense, even after sunset, so my travel companion and I opted to sleep directly on our mats under the open sky. While my trusty GoPro Hero 7 Black worked diligently, capturing shot after shot to create a star trail timelapse, we drifted off to sleep.
Sometime during the night, a distant thunderstorm rolled in. Fortunately, the storm stayed clear of our campsite, and neither of us even stirred from the sound or light. It wasn't until morning that I discovered the dramatic lightning captured in the images. The actual video, I believe, is even more captivating, as it showcases the storm's development and passage against the backdrop of the orbiting night sky, periodically illuminating my tallbike.
While I regret not having a more professional camera at the time – this image was edited from JPGs, limiting its full potential – I'm still quite pleased with the outcome. The tallbike in the foreground is my faithful steed, which has accompanied me and my dog on our global adventures for the past three years.
