Southern Star Trails and Freestyle Motocross: A Journey of Vision and Perseverance

Sometimes, the most breathtaking images are born from a spark of an idea that simmers for years. Such is the case with this remarkable photograph, which combines the celestial dance of Southern star trails with the dynamic energy of freestyle motocross.

The Genesis of an Idea

The concept for this shot first materialized in the mind of its creator back in 2012. However, finding willing participants to bring the vision to life proved challenging. Frustrated by the wait, the artist decided to take on the ambitious project single-handedly in 2015. Despite his own riding skills being a bit rusty and not quite up to the original envisioned trick, he seized the opportune conditions to capture this extraordinary image.

The Technical Setup

When the moment was right, the artist meticulously set up his gear: a Nikon D200 camera, a battery grip for extended shooting, a Tokina 11-17mm f2.8 lens, and an SB-800 flash. All of this was mounted on a sturdy Manfrotto 190xpro-b tripod with an 804rc2 head. With the composition and exposure dialed in, it was time for the first crucial step: the motocross action.

Capturing the Action and the Stars

With an assistant controlling the shutter, the artist performed the motocross maneuver. Once the action frame was secured, the artist swiftly moved to set up the intervalometer for a series of long exposures. For nearly two hours, the camera captured the mesmerizing movement of the stars, creating the beautiful trails that form the backdrop of the image. The artist mentioned that aligning the frames wasn't necessary, as being in the center of the rotation was a fortunate coincidence.

Post-Processing Magic

The captured files were then processed using Lightroom. The star trail images were stacked to create the continuous lines, and the action shot of the motocross rider was layered over the top.

A Unique Vision Realized

This project highlights incredible dedication and a unique artistic vision. While the artist acknowledged the possibility of pursuing this with film, especially large or medium format for immediate feedback, the digital approach allowed for the ambitious execution of this complex concept. It's a testament to what can be achieved when passion meets technical skill, even when tackling both sides of the camera yourself.

We hope you enjoy this captivating blend of space and sport!
