Silver Sliver Galaxy: A Cosmic Gem

Prepare to be mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty of the Silver Sliver Galaxy, a recent celestial marvel captured by an avid astrophotographer. This post delves into the technical details of its creation, showcasing the dedication and skill involved in bringing such cosmic wonders to our screens.

Silver Sliver Galaxy

The Equipment Behind the View

The stunning image was made possible by a robust setup:

  • Telescope: 8" Meade LX200 f/10 SCT
  • Camera: ZWO ASI533MC
  • Guiding: Guide Scope
  • Mount: ZWO AM5 Mount
  • Control: ASIAIR Plus

Processing the Cosmic Canvas

The journey from raw data to this polished image involved a meticulous processing workflow using PixInsight:

  • Acquisition: 52 sub-exposures of 180 seconds each (Gain: 100), totaling 2 hours and 36 minutes of integration time.
  • Processing Steps:
    • Background removal
    • Spectrophotometric Calibration
    • BlurXterminator
    • Noise reduction
    • Histogram Stretch
    • Star Reduction
    • Curves/HDR Transformation

A Note on Conditions

The capture took place on December 9, 2025, in Los Angeles, CA, a location known for its Bortle 9 light pollution. The photographer also noted the unfortunate impact of the moon encroaching on the shot, which may have affected half of the acquired sub-exposures.

Despite the challenging conditions, the result is an outstanding and truly beautiful depiction of the Silver Sliver Galaxy. This image is a testament to the power of modern astrophotography and the passion of those who pursue it.
