Scorpio in the Badlands: A Celestial Dance in a Prehistoric Landscape
This past July, I found myself immersed in the ancient beauty of Dinosaur Provincial Park. After a day spent marveling at fossils and bone beds, the truly alien landscape called to me for a different kind of exploration – one that reached for the stars.
Growing up in Manitoba, I'd seen desert-like areas, but nothing prepared me for the stark, captivating grandeur of the badlands. The thrill of being in such a unique environment was amplified by the knowledge of its resident wildlife – scorpions, black widows, and rattlesnakes kept me on high alert as I set up my gear for a night of stargazing.
Capturing the Cosmos
The result is this breathtaking multi-panel panorama, a testament to a night blessed with clear skies and vibrant airglow. Each exposure, a meticulous 60 seconds at ISO 2500 and f2.2, was captured with my Nikon Z6a and a Sigma 28mm lens.
The soft color bands in the sky beautifully contrast with the rugged, earthly textures of the badlands, creating a truly memorable image. It was a privilege to witness and capture the majestic Scorpio constellation in such a primal and awe-inspiring setting.
