Orion Illuminated by Earth's Night Glow

Witness the celestial hunter, Orion, in all its glory, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Earth's own atmospheric luminescence – the airglow.

Orion over airglow

This captivating image showcases the familiar patterns of Orion, a beacon in the winter sky, as it hovers above a mesmerizing display of green and red hues. Airglow, a faint, natural light emission in a planet's upper atmosphere, often paints the night sky with subtle colors, creating a truly magical scene for observers and photographers alike.

Capturing this Moment:

To capture this breathtaking view, a Sigma 24mm f1.4 lens was employed alongside a Star Adventurer 2i tracking mount. The long exposure photography involved 25 shots of 40 seconds each at f2.8 and ISO 1600 for the sky. The foreground was captured with 3 shots of 20 seconds at f2.8 and ISO 1600, bringing the entire scene to life.

The result is a stunning testament to the beauty that can be found when we look up, blending the grandeur of our solar system with the subtle wonders of our own planet.
