Ethereal Waves: Noctilucent Clouds Paint the Swedish Night Sky

Last night, July 10th, 2025, the skies above Stockholm, Sweden, were graced with a breathtaking spectacle: noctilucent clouds (NLCs) performing a mesmerizing dance. Captured by Peter Rosén, this celestial event offers a rare glimpse into the upper reaches of our atmosphere.

Noctilucent clouds rippling across the Swedish sky

Noctilucent clouds, the highest clouds in Earth's atmosphere, reside in the mesosphere at altitudes ranging from 76 to 85 kilometers. They become visible around midnight when illuminated by the sun dipping below the northern horizon. This incredible footage reveals two distinct layers of NLCs moving in opposing directions, their interaction creating fascinating patterns. As the photographer notes, "It is most noticeable on the right side near the end of the animation where wave-like structures appear." This observation is particularly exciting, as such complex wave formations are not commonly seen.

Another intriguing aspect of this display is how the proximity of the rising sun to the horizon influences the illumination of these high-altitude clouds, making them appear higher in the sky as they catch the light. The footage, originally a video and converted to a GIF, beautifully encapsulates the dynamic and ever-changing nature of these luminous phenomena.

For those who appreciate the wonders of our atmosphere and the universe beyond, this display is a must-see. The dynamic movement and intricate patterns have been likened to ocean waves, a testament to their organic and fluid appearance.

This event is a vivid reminder of the beauty that can be found when we look up, especially during those twilight hours when the sun's rays can still paint the highest reaches of our atmosphere with otherworldly light.
