NGC 4631 is a barred spiral galaxy located about 30 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. Its distinct shape, resembling a whale, is a result of gravitational interactions with a smaller companion galaxy that is not visible in this particular field of view. These interactions have also triggered star formation and distorted the galaxy's structure, creating prominent star-forming regions and a subtle halo of gas.
