Mono Lake Sand Tufas: A Quiet Morning Captured
Dawn at Mono Lake, California, offers a truly magical experience. This recent capture from May 2023 aims to convey that serene, quiet beauty through the art of astrophotography.
The Tufa Formations
Mono Lake is famous for its otherworldly tufa towers, which are calcium-carbonate spires formed by the interaction of freshwater springs and the alkaline lake water. These unique geological formations create a surreal landscape, especially when bathed in the soft light of early morning or the glow of the night sky.
Capturing the Night
The image was captured using a Canon 5dMkIII with a wide-angle 16mm lens. To bring out the details of the night sky and the tufa formations, a long exposure of 30 seconds at f/2.8 and 1600 ISO was employed. A touch of fill light was used on the foreground to ensure the tufas were also well-illuminated.
