Witnessing the Cosmos: Milky Way Timelapse from the Maldives
Imagine this: camping under a canopy of stars, far from the light pollution of civilization. That was the reality for one intrepid photographer who ventured to an uninhabited island in the Maldives for a few nights, armed with a Canon R3 and a dream of capturing the Milky Way in motion.
A Celestial Dance
This post unveils the fruits of that labor – two mesmerizing timelapse sequences of our galaxy, the Milky Way, as it journeys across the night sky. These weren't just snapshots; they were meticulously crafted sequences, each composed of hundreds of individual frames.
The Gear and the Method
The magic was made possible by a powerful Canon R3 camera paired with the versatile RF 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, set to a wide 24mm focal length. Each shot was a deliberate 20-second exposure, with a 45-second interval between them. This allowed ample time for the camera to gather light while ensuring a smooth, flowing motion in the final timelapse.
The first sequence consists of an impressive 212 photos, while the second pushes it further with approximately 300 photos. The result? A stunning visual narrative of our galaxy's movement against the pristine Maldivian backdrop.

An Unforgettable Experience
Capturing the Milky Way is an experience that connects us to the vastness of the universe. To do so from a secluded island, with the gentle sounds of the ocean as a soundtrack, is something truly special. This work is a testament to the beauty that can be found when we venture off the beaten path and embrace the wonders of the night sky.
