Milky Way Over Stonehenge: A Cosmic Spectacle Captured

The photographer utilized a Canon R5ii with a TTArtisan 11mm lens to capture this incredible scene. The process involved stacking approximately 200 frames, each exposed for 20 seconds. The intention was to capture meteors, though none were successfully acquired, the extended exposure time allowed for an exceptionally detailed view of our galaxy.

Processing was carried out using PixInsight, a powerful software suite for astronomical image processing, allowing for separate handling of stars and nebulae to bring out the intricate details of the Milky Way.

Insights and Techniques

As with any astrophotography endeavor, there were challenges. One observation pointed out the slight discrepancy in the horizon's light pollution, noting that the real Stonehenge often experiences more local light. The photographer acknowledged this, explaining the difficulty in aligning the stacked frames due to ground rotation during the long exposure. Techniques such as dither and software like NXT can assist in mitigating 'walking noise' and refining the final image, especially when dealing with tracked exposures.
