Milky Way Majesty: A Journey to Great Basin National Park
There are moments in life that redefine your appreciation for the universe, and capturing the Milky Way over Great Basin National Park was one of them. After a five-mile trek on rugged trails, hauling gear in the darkness alongside my son, we were rewarded with a sight that took our breath away.
Captured deep in the park’s backcountry, far from the encroaching glow of city lights, this view presented one of the clearest and most brilliant skies I have ever witnessed. The sheer density of stars, the subtle glow of our galactic core, and the silence of the desert night created an unforgettable experience.
The Journey and the Gear
The pursuit of such a view is never without its challenges. The trek itself tested our resolve, but the promise of what lay above spurred us onward. To freeze this celestial spectacle, the right equipment is paramount. Here's what made this shot possible:
- Camera: Nikon Z6III
- Lens: 20mm S-Line
- ISO: 800
- Aperture: f/4
- Shutter Speed: 180"
- Tripod: Leofoto Ranger
- Tracker: Moveshootmove Nomad
The combination of a wide-angle lens, a sturdy tripod, and a star tracker allowed for a long exposure, bringing out the faint details of the Milky Way and ensuring sharp focus even against the movement of the stars.
