A Night Under the Lunar Eclipse: Aarhus, Denmark
Have you ever wanted to capture the entire story of a lunar eclipse? From its gentle rise to its twilight descent, all in a single breathtaking image? This is exactly what I aimed to achieve with my recent capture from Aarhus, Denmark.
Crafting the Narrative: The Art of the Composite
To truly convey the experience of watching a lunar eclipse unfold throughout the night, a single photograph wouldn't suffice. This image is a carefully constructed composite, a blend of multiple shots designed to tell a complete story.
It’s comprised of three panoramas of the local Danish landscape and sky, all taken with a wide 15mm lens. This captures the breadth of the scene and the surrounding environment. However, the star of the show – the moon – required a different approach. For the individual moon shots, I utilized a powerful 400mm lens, allowing me to zoom in and reveal the intricate details of our lunar companion as it moved across the sky.
The Illusion of Scale and Time
Now, you might notice that the moon appears larger relative to the width of the image than you might expect. This is intentional! The composite technique allows for artistic interpretation. Similarly, a lunar eclipse, while dramatic, doesn't last for half the night. But the goal here was to illustrate the moon's journey as it appeared through the course of the evening, from the first hints of dusk to the first light of dawn.
By blending these different perspectives and timings, I aimed to create a visual narrative that showcases not just the moon itself, but also the feeling and the progression of the night sky as this incredible celestial event unfolded over Aarhus.
It was a truly rewarding process, and I'm thrilled to share this unique perspective on a lunar eclipse!
