Chandrayaan-2 Spots IM-2 Lander on the Moon
In a remarkable display of lunar reconnaissance, ISRO's Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter has successfully imaged the Intuitive Machines IM-2 'Athena' lander on the surface of the Moon.
The IM-2 'Athena' lander, on its ambitious mission to attempt a soft touchdown near the Moon's South Pole on March 6, 2025, encountered an unexpected outcome. Although the lander itself remained intact, it did not achieve its intended landing site. Instead, it ended up tipping over on its side within a crater.
These striking images were captured by the High-Resolution Camera (OHRC) instrument aboard the Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter. The OHRC's advanced capabilities have allowed for a clear view of the Athena lander in its unusual position, resting on its side within the lunar crater. This provides valuable data for understanding the landing sequence and the lunar terrain.
This observation highlights the persistent efforts of space agencies and private companies in exploring our celestial neighbor and the crucial role of orbital assets in documenting these endeavors.
