Cat's Eye Galaxy - M94

This particular rendition showcases the culmination of dedicated observation and meticulous processing, resulting in a truly awe-inspiring view. The intricate spiral arms and the bright, active core of M94 are brought to life with incredible clarity.

The Science Behind the Shot

Creating such a detailed image requires a combination of powerful equipment and sophisticated processing techniques. Here's a glimpse into the journey of capturing and refining this view of the Cat's Eye Galaxy:

Equipment Used:

  • Telescope: 8" Meade LX200 f/10 SCT
  • Camera: ZWO ASI533MC Camera
  • Mount: HEQ5 Pro Mount
  • Guiding: Guide Scope
  • Control System: ASIAIR Plus

Processing Steps:

The journey from raw data to this polished image involved a rigorous processing workflow in PixInsight:

  1. Integration: A 2x Drizzle Integration was performed on subs ranging from 60 seconds to 240 seconds, resulting in a total integration time of approximately 4 hours and 10 minutes. A gain of 200 was used for optimal data capture.
  2. Calibration: The raw data underwent Spectrophotometry Calibration to ensure accurate color representation.
  3. Sharpening & Noise Reduction: BlurXterminator was applied for sharpening, followed by comprehensive noise reduction to reveal finer details.
  4. Stretching & Enhancement: Histogram Stretch was used to bring out the full dynamic range, and HDR/Curves Transformation was applied to further enhance the contrast and visual appeal.

Acquisition Details:

The data for this image was captured between October 4th and November 25th from Los Angeles, CA, experiencing Bortle 8 to 9 light pollution conditions. Despite the challenging light pollution, the dedication to processing has yielded remarkable results.

This reprocessed image of M94 is a testament to the passion and skill within the astrophotography community. It inspires us to revisit our own targets and explore the endless possibilities of image processing to reveal the universe's hidden wonders.
