Dancing Lights in the Greenland Sky: Auroras Captured Over Kangerlussuaq
On the evening of September 14, 2025, just after sunset in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, a remarkable celestial display unfolded. Photographer Rayann Elzein, part of an expedition on a ship anchored in the Kangerlussuaq fjord, had a front-row seat to the captivating aurora borealis.
The conditions were ripe for an aurora sighting, with forecasters noting a fast solar wind and a significant shift in the Bz component, moving from positive values to below -10 nT. While the auroras took their time to appear, testing the patience of both the photographer and the expedition guests, the wait was undeniably worth it.
As expected by those familiar with the auroral oval, the sky eventually erupted in a blaze of color. The intensity of the display prompted the photographer to wake the entire ship, inviting everyone to witness the spectacle from the outer decks. Elzein then proceeded to capture the vibrant auroras from various angles, documenting the stunning beauty of these natural light shows.
