Capturing the Sombrero Galaxy (M104) from Light-Polluted Skies
Astrophotography often presents a unique set of challenges, not least of which is battling light pollution. Yet, even under skies typically considered less than ideal, like Bortle 7/8, the universe still offers breathtaking subjects to capture. Today, we're diving into a stunning image of the Sombrero Galaxy (M104), showcasing how dedication and the right techniques can overcome terrestrial limitations.
The Target: The Sombrero Galaxy (M104)
The Sombrero Galaxy, officially known as M104, is a spectacular spiral galaxy located about 29 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. It's renowned for its distinctive dust lane that gives it a passing resemblance to a sombrero hat.
The Setup and Acquisition
The astrophotographer behind this incredible capture utilized a robust setup to gather light from this distant galaxy:
- Camera: A modified Canon 6D was employed, chosen for its excellent low-light performance.
- Telescope: A Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED refractor, paired with a 0.85× reducer/flattener, was used to achieve a wider field of view and correct for optical aberrations.
- Mount: The Sky-Watcher HEQ5 Pro mount provided stable tracking, crucial for long exposures.
- Filter: An L-Pro filter was incorporated, designed to help suppress light pollution while allowing important wavelengths of light from deep-sky objects to pass through.
- Data: A total of 53 exposures, each lasting 120 seconds (2 minutes), were collected at ISO 1600. This means approximately 1 hour and 46 minutes of total integration time was dedicated to this target.
The Processing
Acquiring the data is only half the battle. The raw images are then meticulously processed to reveal the hidden beauty of the galaxy:
- Stacking: The collected exposures were stacked using Astro Pixel Processor (APP). APP is a powerful tool known for its advanced calibration, alignment, and stacking algorithms, which are essential for reducing noise and bringing out faint details.
- Editing and Polish: Following the stacking process, the image was refined in Adobe Photoshop. This stage involves adjusting levels, curves, color balance, and applying sharpening to enhance the visual appeal and bring out the intricate structure of the Sombrero Galaxy.
