Capturing the Milky Way with a Smartphone: A First-Time Success
It's always exciting to see what can be achieved with readily available technology, and this recent astrophotography feat is no exception! A dedicated photographer has managed to capture a breathtaking image of the Milky Way using nothing more than a Samsung Galaxy S23+ smartphone.
The Setup and Process
The image was taken at Camp Hero State Park in Montauk, NY, a location estimated to be Bortle 3, offering excellent dark sky conditions. The photographer utilized the "Expert Raw" feature on their Samsung Galaxy S23+ to capture the celestial wonders.
The process involved taking a total of 43 individual photos. Each shot boasted a 30-second exposure time, an ISO of 3200, and a white balance of 3900K. This meticulous approach is crucial for gathering enough light from faint objects like the Milky Way.
Stacking and Editing for Brilliance
To achieve the final stunning result, all 43 captured images were stacked using Sequator, a powerful free software for stacking astronomical images. Stacking helps to reduce noise and bring out finer details that would be lost in a single exposure.
The stacked image was then further refined and enhanced in Adobe Lightroom. This editing phase is where the true magic happens, bringing out the vibrant colors and intricate structure of our galaxy.
