Witnessing the Celestial Spectacle: Milky Way from Pickett State Park
A recent trip to Pickett CCC Memorial State Park revealed the breathtaking clarity of a Class 2/3 dark sky, offering an unforgettable experience for this astrophotographer. The drive was well worth it to witness the Milky Way so vividly, even to the naked eye. It's a stark reminder of the incredible celestial wonders we often miss due to light pollution.
Beyond the prominent band of our galaxy, the night sky offered further delights. With a little averted vision, the faint haze of the Andromeda Galaxy was clearly discernible. It's truly incredible what can be seen when you get away from the city lights.
All these spectacular shots were achieved using an iPhone 14 Pro. With exposures ranging from 20 to 30 seconds, the capabilities of modern smartphone cameras for astrophotography are truly impressive. Following the capture, the images were processed in Lightroom, with dehazing and minor tweaks applied to enhance the detail and bring out the true essence of the night sky.
This experience highlights that you don't need professional-grade equipment to connect with the universe. Sometimes, all it takes is a good location and a willingness to explore the darkness.
