Bodie Island Lighthouse Under the Stars: A 3 AM Astrophotography Journey
Sometimes, the best shots come after the longest drives and the earliest mornings. This past weekend, I embarked on an 8-hour journey to Bodie Island, North Carolina, with one goal in mind: to capture the iconic Bodie Island Lighthouse bathed in the glow of the night sky. The alarm clock was set for a rather ungodly 3 AM, but as you'll see, it was absolutely worth every minute.
The Mission: Capturing the Celestial Spectacle
The allure of a clear, dark sky above a historic landmark is a powerful draw for any astrophotographer. Bodie Island, with its stunning lighthouse, provided the perfect backdrop for a night of capturing the cosmos. The drive was long, but the anticipation of what the night would hold kept me fueled.
The Gear:
- Camera: Sony A7IV
- Lens: Sigma 16mm F1.4
This combination is a fantastic setup for low-light photography, allowing for excellent detail and light-gathering capabilities.
The Shot:

This image, taken in the quiet hours of 3 AM, showcases the majestic Bodie Island Lighthouse against a canvas of stars. The wide aperture of the Sigma 16mm lens, combined with the sensitivity of the Sony A7IV, allowed me to capture the faintest starlight while keeping the lighthouse sharp and defined. The long exposure technique brought out the rich colors of the night sky and the subtle details of the lighthouse structure.
The Experience:
Being there at 3 AM, with the only sound being the gentle crashing of waves and the distant cry of a seabird, was truly magical. The dedication to reaching this location and waiting for the perfect conditions paid off with a result that speaks for itself. It's moments like these that remind me why I love this hobby.
I hope you enjoy this glimpse into a very early morning at Bodie Island. Let me know what you think in the comments!
