Prepare to be amazed! This stunning image of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) was captured using a setup that defies expectations. What makes this shot particularly special is the ingenious use of a guidescope as the primary imaging instrument, paired with a planetary camera. This entire setup cost a mere 30€, proving that the wonders of the cosmos are accessible even on a tight budget.
The Unconventional Setup
The astrophotographer behind this shot utilized a 30/120mm guidescope as their main telescope. For capturing the light, a Neptune C-II planetary camera was employed. This combination, while unconventional, delivered remarkable results, showcasing the vastness and beauty of our neighboring galaxy.
The Acquisition and Processing Workflow
The image data was acquired over 10 minutes of 5-second exposures. Following the capture, a rigorous processing workflow was undertaken to bring out the intricate details of M31:
- Stacking: The raw frames were stacked using Siril, a powerful open-source astronomical image processing application.
- Denoising: GraXpert was used to effectively reduce noise, ensuring a cleaner and sharper final image.
- Final Touches: GIMP, a versatile free and open-source image editor, was employed for the crucial final adjustments, including enhancing saturation, refining contrast, and fine-tuning the white balance to achieve a visually striking result.
