A Night at the Very Large Array

Imagine standing beneath the vast New Mexico sky, surrounded by the colossal structures of the Very Large Array (VLA). This incredible shot captures a moment just after astronomical twilight, showcasing the iconic radio telescope dishes in all their glory.

The Very Large Array at night

This 20-minute exposure, taken with a Canon 5dMkIII using a 16mm lens at f/3.5 and ISO 100, beautifully illustrates the unique character of the VLA. The slight motion blur seen in the dishes is a testament to their constant adjustment, moving every five minutes or so to track celestial objects.

It's not every day one gets to witness such a sight. The VLA occasionally opens its doors to the public for special events, like their annual Star Party. These events offer a fantastic opportunity for enthusiasts to visit designated areas and capture the magic of this scientific marvel under the stars.
