A Glimpse of the Full Lunar Disk from North Texas

This past August 8th, 2025, provided a spectacular opportunity to capture the entire illuminated face of our Moon from North Texas. The result is a breathtaking image showcasing the lunar disk in all its glory.

This remarkable shot was achieved using a sophisticated setup that highlights the dedication and skill of the astrophotographer.

Equipment and Acquisition Details:

  • Camera: OM System OM-1 Mk II
  • Lens: Olympus 100-400mm @ 400mm
  • Aperture: f/8
  • Shutter Speed: 1/1000s
  • ISO: 200

Processing Techniques:

The final image is a testament to meticulous processing. A "10% stack" of approximately 150 individual frames was utilized, a technique that combines the best parts of multiple exposures to reduce noise and enhance detail. Post-processing was carried out using DarkTable, where sliders were carefully adjusted to bring out the finest features of the lunar surface.

This image serves as an inspiration for fellow amateur astronomers and astrophotographers, demonstrating the stunning results achievable with the right equipment and a passion for the cosmos.
