A Deep Look into Scorpius: An 83-Hour, 12-Panel Mosaic from Bortle 1

Get ready to be transported to one of the most visually stunning regions of our night sky – the constellation Scorpius. Captured over an incredible 83 hours and meticulously pieced together from 12 individual panels, this mosaic represents a monumental effort in astrophotography, all under the pristine conditions of a Bortle 1 dark sky site.

Deep look into Scorpius

This isn't the first time the astrophotographer behind this work has tackled a large-scale mosaic. Their previous 120-hour, 12-panel endeavor of the California to Pleiades region was so impressive it earned a spot on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). Building on that success, they turned their attention to a personal favorite: Scorpius.

Unveiling the Celestial Wonders of Scorpius

The image showcases a vibrant tapestry of deep-sky objects, each with its own unique allure:

  • Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex: Prominently featured in the top right, this region is renowned for its intricate dust clouds and glowing nebulae, painted with stunning colors.
  • The Blue Horsehead Nebula: Located in the bottom portion of the mosaic, this iconic dark nebula is recognized for its distinctive horse-head shape, silhouetted against a backdrop of starlight.
  • Sh2-1 and Surrounding LBN Objects: In the top left, the area around Sh2-1, along with numerous other faint but significant objects (LBN objects), are revealed. These 'grey areas' are filled with subtle details and structures that truly reward a closer look.

The Gear and the Process

Achieving such a detailed and expansive view requires specialized equipment and a dedicated workflow:

  • Mount: AP Mach1
  • Camera: ZWO 533mm
  • Filters: Chroma HaLRGB
  • Lens: Rokinon 135mm at F2.8

The captured data was then masterfully processed using PixInsight for its powerful image calibration and stacking capabilities, followed by Lightroom for final color enhancement and adjustments.

While the version shared here is optimized for Reddit's file size limitations, you can explore the full, uncompressed glory of this astrophotographic achievement on Astrobin and Instagram. Prepare to zoom in and get lost in the incredible details!

This mosaic is a testament to the power of patience, advanced equipment, and the sheer beauty of the cosmos when viewed from truly dark skies. It's a must-see for any astronomy enthusiast!
